Sinus Lift
At a Glance:
- Purpose: Adds bone height to the upper jaw to support dental implants.
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with IV sedation options available.
- Procedure Time: Typically 45–90 minutes.
- Recovery: 2–3 days of mild downtime; 4–9 months for full bone integration.
Establishing a Foundation for Dental Implants
For many patients needing dental implants, a lack of bone volume in the upper jaw is a primary obstacle. Whether due to long-term tooth loss or natural shrinking of the jawbone, there is often insufficient height to anchor an implant securely.
At Oral & Facial Surgery of Pittsburgh, we address this deficiency with a sinus lift (also known as sinus augmentation). This established surgical procedure regenerates bone in the upper jaw, creating a solid foundation for long-term implant success.
Why Is It Needed?
A sinus lift is typically recommended when the natural bone height in the upper jaw is insufficient to hold a dental implant. This usually occurs due to:
- Natural Anatomy: The maxillary sinuses (air-filled spaces behind your cheeks) may naturally sit too close to the jaw.
- Tooth Loss: When teeth are missing for a long time, the jawbone naturally shrinks (resorbs).
- Periodontal Disease: Past gum disease can erode the bone level.
The Procedure: Step-by-Step
Our Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons utilize advanced 3D imaging (CBCT) to map your unique anatomy and plan the surgery with high precision.
- Anesthesia: To ensure your comfort, we utilize local anesthesia and offer sedation options (including IV sedation). Once comfortable, a small incision is made in the gum tissue near the back teeth.
- The Lift: A small window is created in the bone to access the sinus cavity. The sinus membrane is gently lifted upward to its original position.
- Graft Placement: The space created by the lift is filled with sterile bone grafting material. This acts as a scaffold, stimulating your body to regenerate natural bone.
- Healing: The site is sutured closed. Over the next 4 to 9 months, the graft integrates with your natural jawbone, forming a dense structure capable of supporting an implant.
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery is generally straightforward. Most patients report only mild discomfort manageable with over-the-counter medication.
- Downtime: Expect minor swelling for 2–3 days.
- Diet: Soft foods are recommended for the first week.
- Smoking: For the success of the graft, patients should refrain from smoking during the healing process, as nicotine restricts blood flow and can cause graft failure.
Critical Recovery Tip: To avoid disrupting the new graft, you must avoid blowing your nose for at least two weeks following surgery. The pressure created in the sinus cavity can displace the healing membrane. If you must sneeze, do so with your mouth open to alleviate pressure.
Why Choose OFS Pittsburgh?
Sinus augmentation requires a deep understanding of facial structures and surgical precision. Patients in Wexford and the greater Pittsburgh area choose our practice for three distinct reasons:
- Board Certified Specialists: Unlike general dentists, our surgeons have years of hospital-based anesthesia and surgical training specifically focused on the complex anatomy of the upper jaw.
- Safety & Technology: We use state-of-the-art 3D imaging to visualize the surgical site before we begin, minimizing risk and ensuring predictable outcomes.
- Patient Comfort: We prioritize your experience, offering a full spectrum of anesthesia options to ensure a pain-free procedure.

FAQs
Have questions? We have answers. Below are some of the most common questions our patients have about sinus lifts.
Is a sinus lift painful?
No. We utilize effective local anesthesia and sedation. Most patients report that post-operative soreness is mild—often less intense than a tooth extraction.
How long does the surgery take?
While every case is unique, the procedure typically takes between 45–90 minutes.
What grafting material is used?
We utilize safe, sterile grafting materials suited to your specific biology. This may include donor bone, synthetic materials, or autogenous bone (your own). Your surgeon will determine the optimal material during your consultation.
Can the dental implant be placed immediately?
It depends on the existing bone density. If sufficient natural bone remains to stabilize the dental implant, we may place it simultaneously (an “immediate placement”). However, if the bone is significantly atrophied, the graft must heal for 4–9 months before the implant can be placed. This waiting period allows the graft to fully harden and integrate with your jaw, ensuring a stable foundation.
Is a sinus lift covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans do contribute to the cost of medically necessary oral surgery, though coverage varies. Our administrative team will work with your insurance provider to maximize your benefits and provide a clear cost estimate prior to surgery.
